Corso di Dottorato in Scienze Matematiche

The PhD Programme in Mathematical Sciences offered by the University of Padova at the Department of Mathematics is a qualified program of studies that prepares students for a professional or academic career in the area of mathematics and its applications. The Programme offers doctoral degrees in the areas of Mathematics and of Computational Mathematics. Advanced courses are offered by the Department of Mathematics each year, taught by members of the Department or by well-known international specialists. The two curricula comprise a wide range of disciplines in which the department has a well-established international reputation.

Doctoral Program "Brain Mind and Computer Science"

The Brain Mind and Computer Science (BMCS) doctoral program is the result of a joint effort of the computer science, applied cognitive science, neuroscience and social science groups at the University of Padova. It is organised in two curricula:

  • Computer science for societal challenges and innovation
  • Neuroscience, technology and society

This collaboration, even if still in its infancy, shows great potential in various areas of scientific research as well as in highly innovative and competitive production sectors. Research and innovation programs funded by the European Union, such as HORIZON 2020, give prominence to related topics like cognitive systems and robotics, symbiotic systems, e-health, information and communication technology for the elderly, ambient assisted living, smart cities and smart communities and many others. This is a most evident acknowledgment of the strategic role of research efforts capable of combining scientific expertise from diverse domains of specialization, into organic and innovative practices and methodologies.

The BMCS doctoral program offers an inspiring, collaborative, and supportive training atmosphere for post-graduate study. PhD students with diverse backgrounds and interests are challenged to work together while at the same time pursuing their own project and specialization. Modern laboratories and facilities equipped with state-of-the-art research technology will host their activity.

The Computer Science group of the Department of Mathematics is supporting and leading the curriculum in "Computer science for societal challenges and innovation".

Students enrolled in this curriculum will be trained and develop their research in the following areas:

  • Programming languages (including models and languages for concurrent, mobile, and distributed systems; techniques for static analysis and automatic verification of software systems).
  • Artificial intelligence (including machine learning; pattern recognition; neural networks and kernel methods; preference reasoning, knowledge representation, multi-agent systems, computational social choice).
  • ICT Systems (including wireless networks; mobile applications; online games; privacy and security; user authentication; cloud computing; web technologies; social networks; semantic web).
  • Human-Computer interaction (including interaction design; usability and user experience evaluation; information visualization; brain-computer interface & symbiotic systems; multimodal interaction; sensing and affective systems; human-robot interaction; mobile HCI; universal design).

Algant-Doc doctoral programme

The ALGANT-DOC doctoral programme, set up by the ALGANT consortium, is a collaborative scheme creating ideal conditions for the production of high level research in pure mathematics, leading to a double and/or joint doctor degree, prepared under joint supervision at a minimum of two partner institutions. With ALGANT-DOC, the doctoral candidates will acquire the expertise and skills needed to pursue a career at the highest academic level.
