Plateau's problem of finding the minimal surface spanning a given contour has led to many developments of mathematical analysis, some of them related to the regularity issue of weak solutions. One of these is Almegren's theory of Dirichlet minimizing Q-valued functions, which is the starting point of the regularity theory for minimal currents in arbitrary codimension. In this talk I will revisit this theory: in particular, I will discuss an easier approach to Q-valued functons, suggesting a new, intrinsic point of view and extending some of his results.
