Mobility and handover security in Wireless IP Networks

Wireless and mobile technologies have changed our communication and information access in global scale. The success of cellular systems is a visible example which creates a huge market with billions of mobile phone users all over the world. As proposed in the forthcoming 4G networks, the future wireless networks are envisioned to be a highly integrated platform which is built upon Internet Protocol (IP). Under the common IP backbone, multiple networks with heterogeneous wireless technologies can be combined to offer mobile users a unified network access.
Because different wireless technologies vary widely in terms of bandwidth, latency, transmission rate, and network coverage, currently no single wireless system provides an optimal combination with high bandwidth, low latency, fast transmission rate, and wide area coverage. Therefore, it is a great challenge to support seamless mobility with the best performance in the existing networking environment. The key to this challenge lies in a flexible utilization of the available networks, which can be achieved by switching between different wireless access technologies whenever necessary. In the context of wireless mobility, the switching procedure across different access domains is referred as handover. Due to its key role in mobility management, how to enhance handover performance has attracted lots of investigations. At the same time, security challenges in wireless networks add complexity to the handover procedure in that security operations require extra processing time and resources that may bring negative impacts to handover in terms of communication delay and loss. As handover is regarded as a security-sensitive process, there is a need to achieve a balance between good level of security and acceptable handover performance at the same time.
Our research focus is put on the localized domain to evaluate the security impacts on handover across different sub-domains. Based on the studies of state of art security and mobility management schemes, the research questions that need to be answered include: is it possible to reach a balance between the security and performance, and further what optimizations can be implemented to achieve the secured and efficient handovers in such localized domain.
