CP2000 Post-Conference Workshop on
SOFT CONSTRAINTS: THEORY AND PRACTICE

Description of the workshop:
In the last years there has been a lot of work on extending the
classical framework of constraints to handle many kinds of soft features,
like fuzziness, preferences, uncertainties, and costs. New frameworks
have been defined and their properties have been studied,
but much work is still to be done to make soft constraints a
useful and convenient tool when trying to model and solve a real-life
problem. Thus, this is the time to assess the value of these first
efforts and to extend them in the most promising directions.
This workshop will cover all topics related to soft constraints.
Moreover, we encourage both theoretical work and reports on
practical applications of soft constraints.
More in detail,
the workshop will certainly deal with the following issues:
- algorithms to solve classes of soft constraints;
- constraint languages that can deal with soft constraints;
- methods, techniques, and environments to
model real-life problems as soft constraint problems;
- applications of soft constraints.
This workshop is intended to build on the experience and success
of the CP99 workshop on the same subject,
and its aim is to provide a forum where researchers
currently working in this area can discuss their most recent ideas
and developments and think together about the most promising new directions.
Therefore we encourage the presentation of work in progress or on
specialized aspects of soft constraints.
Papers that bridge the gap between
theory and practice are especially welcome.
The workshop is held in conjunction with the Sixth International
Conference on Principles and Practice of Constraint Programming (CP2000),
which will take place in Singapore,
on September 18-22, 2000.

Preliminary program:
The workshop program will consists of five presentations, selected
among the submitted papers, and two invited talks, by
Thomas Schiex and Alan Borning. The full program can be found

Paper Submissions:
Authors willing to present their work are invited to submit
a paper by June 5, 2000. Authors will be notified of the
acceptance or rejection of their papers by July 1, 2000.
Final versions of the accepted papers will be due on
September 1st, 2000.
Papers must not exceed 10 pages . The title
page should include the name, address, telephone number, and
electronic mailing address for each author, as well as a list of
keywords. A contact author should also be provided. Electronic
submission in PostScript format, to the address
cp2000-soft@math.unipd.it, is mandatory, unless
special cases occur (to be notified to and agreed aupon with
the organizers).
At least one of the authors for each accepted paper is expected to
attend the meeting and present the work. The papers will be
made available electronically at the workshop web page.
