Nonstandard flows in porous media: mathematics vs. engineering

Riassunto

In this talk by "nonstandard flows in porous media" we mean two classes of flows:
The aim of the talk is to review some problems that have been addressed over the years by a group of mathematicians in Florence, very often in collaboration (and sometimes in competition) with engineers. A large number of problems will be listed from different areas (marble damage by air pollution, food industry, geology, etc.) and some more attention will be devoted to the results recently obtained using an upscaling technique, with particular reference to erosion processes (in the first class) and to modules for the ultra-filtration of water (in the second class). We will point out that the same technique has many more applications. For instance: growth of biofilms for bioremediation processes (in the first class), and (for the second class) irrigation pipes, dialyzers, and the kidney itself (works partly concluded or just planned).
