This page gathers up the following heterogeneous pieces of information about this manual:
On the contrary, the following item has been put on a separate page, owing to its length:
If, instead, you are looking for an introduction to the R.O.M.E.68000 system, you should read the page entitled, exactly, Introduction.
This is the version of the R.O.M.E.68000 system that this manual describes:
0.51
This is the date on which this manual was released:
not yet released
Some initial versions of the R.O.M.E.68000 system were developed since the summer of 1988; in the summer of 1989, the project was completely rebuilt from scratch, and another major revision took place in the summer of 1990 (yes, of course, always in summer: when I was on holiday!). Since then, the R.O.M.E.68000 architecture became gradually more stable, and by the summer of 1992 it had reached more or less the form it has now; but minor adjustments are still going on. None of these revisions of the system was given a version number.
Starting from the autumn of 1994, the author began to give out to a couple of his friends some notes containing the first account of the R.O.M.E.68000 system ever reviewed by other persons besides him; these notes were labelled as Version 0.50. 0.50 is therefore the first version number ever assigned to a release of the R.O.M.E.68000 manual. You are now reading version 0.51, the first version released to the public. Version 0.51 differs from version 0.50 in that it allows a zero value for the ``final'' (i.e., master) pointer to the register page when ``movable registers mode'' is being used (version 0.50, on the contrary, forbade such zero value); see Section 3 and Section 4 of Chapter II for details.
It is the author's desire that the material contained in this manual be spread abroad as much as possible. As long as it is not for profit (but what profit could you ever get from this stuff?) you are therefore not only allowed, but also encouraged to copy and put about, by any means, this hypertext or any part of it, provided that you include this copyright notice in any copy or excerpt. Feel free, as well, to copy its source files, to post them on electronic bulletin boards, to allow other people to make copies of them, to print them or the hypertextual pages themselves, to convert them to another markup form (e.g., LaTeX or TeX), or to translate them into another language, but always under the condition that you include this copyright notice in any copies, printed pages, etc. that you give to other persons. In the case of brief excerpts privately handed out to your friends, it is sufficient that you make sure that they have read this notice and have understood its contents and its spirit.
If you copy or reproduce in any form this manual or a part of it, and give the copy or reproduction to other persons, you are not permitted to charge them with money, except for the mere cost of the physical medium used for the reproduction (e.g., diskettes) or of the process of reproduction itself (e.g., photocopying). Distribution of this manual for profit, and more generally any commercial exploitation of it and of its contents, of any kind, are explicitly forbidden. (Commercial exploitation of this stupid trifle? Am I silly or crazy?)
As already said in the copyright notice, you are free to obtain a copy of this manual from every source you like; and if you are reading this, chances are that you have already access to a source. However, the latest and official release of this manual is available on the World-Wide Web through the following URL:

This information may help you if you are reading a copy of this manual obtained from some other source (printed, downloaded, etc.).
If you have any remark, suggestion, proposal, etc. about this manual or about the R.O.M.E.68000 system itself, simply send an e-mail message to the author's address (mezzetti@math.unipd.it). Please identify such a message by a subject like R.O.M.E.68000 remark (the exact wording of the subject is not essential: it is not going to be read by an automa).
This manual has been previewed with Netscape Navigator 2.01 on an Apple Macintosh Performa 630 computer. Some details of the graphic interface, such as colour hues and dimensions of the icons, have been fine-tuned for best rendering on this or similar equipment. This has not been done with any particular intention in mind; simply, when I had to choose, say, a colour for an icon, I chose one from the palette of my computer. Of course, the manual can be viewed with any graphic browser running on any platform, but perhaps some icons will not be perfectly aligned, or their colours won't be pure.
Non-graphic browsers, however, are not suitable for the present hypertext. This is because many essential pieces of information are given through in-line GIF images: if your browser cannot display such images, you won't be able to understand the contents of this manual. Correcting this shortcoming requires some deal of work, so I shall set my hand to this task only if explicitly requested to do so (please note that this is only a necessary, and not sufficient condition!).
