From microscopic to macroscopic : how to reconcile different mathematical descriptions of gases?

Tuesday, March 24, 2026 - 16:30

This lecture concerns the rigorous passage from microscopic descriptions of gases (typically via Newton's laws for the elementary particles constituting the gas) to macroscopic descriptions (typically the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations). This is a widely open question, but we will present some results in this context, which most often rely on an intermediate, mesoscale description via the Boltzmann equation.

Short Bio

Isabelle Gallagher is Professor at the UFR de Mathématiques, Université Paris Cité, and since 2024, President of the Société Mathématique de France. Previously, she served as Professor at École Normale Supérieure de Paris (2017-2025) and held various leadership positions including Director of the Fondation Sciences Mathématiques de Paris (2019-2023).

Her research focuses on partial differential equations, particularly in fluid mechanics and mathematical physics, harmonic analysis and Lie groups. She has received numerous prestigious honors, including the CNRS Silver Medal (2016), the Prix Sophie Germain from the Académie des Sciences (2018), she delivered several distinguished lectures and she was an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians (Seoul, 2014).
