Reaction – diffusion equations and propagation phenomena

Starting with the description of reaction-diffusion mechanisms in physics, biology and ecology, I will explain the motivation for this class of non-linear partial differential equations and mention some of the interesting history of these systems. Then, I will review classical results in the homogeneous setting and discuss their relevance. The second part of the lecture will be concerned with recent developments in non-homogeneous settings, in particular for Fisher-KPP type equations. Such problems are encountered in models from ecology or in social sciences and raise new mathematical questions. The mathematical theory will be seen to shed light on questions arising in this context.

-Breve biografia
A graduate of Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris, with a PhD from Université Paris VI, Henri Berestycki went to the University of Chicago as a “L.E. Dickson Instructor in Mathematics” (1975-1977). He returned to France as a researcher at the French National Center of Scientific Research (CNRS). Having obtained his "Habilitation to direct research" in France in 1981, he became a Professor of Mathematics at Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Université Paris VI) in 1988, while simultaneously teaching at École Normale Supérieure and École Polytechnique in Paris.
In 2001, he was appointed to a research position at EHESS, the Institute for Higher Studies in Social Sciences in Paris. Henri Berestycki is currently the Director of the Center for Mathematics and Modeling in Social Sciences (CAMS) of EHESS.
A visiting professor in the Department of Mathematics of the University of Chicago since 2005, he served as the director of the Financial Mathematics Program there from 2010 to 2012.
His research is concerned with nonlinear partial differential equations and modeling in physics, biology and social sciences.
Henri Berestycki was the recipient of the Prix Sophie Germain of the French Academy of Sciences (2004), the Humboldt- Gay-Lussac Prize in Germany (2004). He was awarded the French Legion of Honor in 2010 and was named a fellow of the American Mathematical Society in 2012.
