Yann Brenier obtained his Ph.D. from Université Paris IX - Dauphine in 1985 under the supervision of Guy Chavent. Since 2012, he has been a CNRS research director at the Laurent Schwartz Mathematics Center at École Polytechnique, after holding a similar position at the Dieudonné Laboratory at Université Nice Sophia Antipolis from 2000 to 2012.
His research focuses primarily on PDEs, numerical analysis, mathematical problems of fluid mechanics and plasma physics, and optimal transport theory. He has made significant contributions in such fields and he has published more than 100 research articles in leading scientific journals. Among his achievements, Yann Brenier is the discoverer of the polar factorization theorem, and names the Benamou-Brenier formula.
Among his many distinctions, Brenier was a junior member of the Institut Universitaire de France from 1996 to 2000. He was invited to speak at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Beijing in 2002, and delivered a plenary lecture at ICIAM in Sydney in 2003. In 2005, he received the prestigious Prix Petit d'Ormoy, Carrière, Thébault from the French Academy of Sciences. Additionally, he was awarded the Annales de l'IHP Prize in 1999, shared with Lucilla Corrias.
