Alongside Education and Research, which constitute the first two missions of the University, the Department of Mathematics also engages in creating opportunities for contact, sharing, and exchange with the rest of society through initiatives and activities related to the Third Mission.
The Third Mission involves the entire University and has as its main purpose the dissemination and valorization of ideas, knowledge, and skills that are developed daily by the various Departments, generating a social impact and providing an active contribution to the cultural and economic growth of the territory.
Among the main Third Mission activities proposed by the Department of Mathematics “Tullio Levi-Civita” are:
- Meetings with institutions, associations, and companies, aimed at stimulating collaborations and ensuring a continuous update of skills to meet the needs of the market and the territory.
- Various opportunities and methods of continuous learning (e.g., courses and seminars for teachers or the creation of an internal community within the Department to develop synergistic teaching methods and a shared learning path).
- Initiatives aimed at achieving inclusion, accessibility, and gender equality objectives and implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
- MOOC courses.
- In-person and distance activities with school students.
- Actions and projects aimed at making museum spaces and university libraries accessible and inclusive, fostering the sharing of the University’s historical, artistic, and cultural heritage.
- Cultural events and informal dissemination activities aimed at the general public.
- Promotion and protection of the intellectual and cultural heritage generated within the Department and/or in collaboration with institutions and companies (patents, university spin-offs, partnerships).
By carrying out these activities, the Department of Mathematics contributes to the interaction between the academic world and the broader society, making knowledge and expertise available for the benefit of the community and promoting sustainable development and access to education for everyone.
