Monday, May 13, 2024 at 17:30 - Aula Magna Galilei, Palazzo Bo - Stanislav Smirnov
On May 13, at 17:30, in the Aula Magna Galilei of Palazzo Bo, 2010 Fields Medal winner prof. Stanislav Smirnov will be giving a talk on the occasion of a new European research network in theoretical and mathematical physics.
The Lectio Magistralis is titled “Tiles and Puzzles” – attendance is free, but we strongly suggest to register via the following link: https://unipd.link/smirnov_reservations_1305
Abstract
Suppose we are given (an infinite supply of) a few different tiles (puzzle-pieces). Can one tile the whole plane? How many tilings will there be for a given area? If there are many, how a random one will look like? We will discuss how even for simple tiles, like two different polygons, these problems become very interesting and relate to many areas, from logic to statistical physics.
